ANTI-CAA MOVEMENT BACK ON GUWAHATI STREETS

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: The NESO (North East Students' Organisation) observed 'Black Day' across the region on Saturday. It was on this day that the Rajya Sabha passed the 'Citizenship Amendment Bill-2019'.

However, several prominent student organisations of the region opposed this move.

In Assam under the aegis of AASU (All Assam Students Union), the day was observed by hoisting of black flags in district headquarters.

NESO chairman Samuel Jyrwa, secretary general Sinam Prakash and advisor Samujjal Bhattacharjya in a joint statement said, "The people of North East will never accept CAA. Our legal battle and protest will continue till CAA is withdrawn.

AJP protest: On the second anniversary of the passage of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill by the parliament, the Assam Jatiya Praishad (AJP) on Saturday took out a massive protest rally in the city.

On the second day of the party's ten-day 'Jatiya Sankalpa Abhiyan' on Saturday, thousands of people led by AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi, took out a rally from the party's headquarters to Dispur and burnt copies of the CAA -- Citizenship (Amendment) Act - at Zoo Road and AIDC point.

The protesters raised slogans of 'CAA aami namanu' (we won't accept CAA) and 'CAA batil korok' (repeal CAA) and marched along the thoroughfares of the city waving black flags despite resistance by the police.

The agitators hoisted a black flag at the AJP headquarters as a mark of protest against the passing of the 'contentious' Citizenship (Amendment) Bill by the Parliament two years ago on December 11, 2019.

AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi alleged that by forcefully imposing CAA on the state, the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre had hatched a conspiracy to destroy the Assamese identity. This conspiracy cannot be tolerated under any circumstances he said while adding that that those who are supporting the law are against the Assamese people. "The BJP claims that the Assamese people by voting in favour of the BJP have expressed its support towards CAA, which is a lie. The BJP has won the elections through the politics of temptation-promises and communal division.

If the people had supported CAA, the government would have implemented it by now which is not the case. They are not implementing it fearing massive protest by the people of the state. That's why we have to continue our protest against CAA as our culture, language and identity is at stake. Until the Centre withdraws it we will carry on our protest," Gogoi said.
