All Assam Students' Union stages statewide protest against NHPC

GUWAHATI: The AASU (All Assam Students' Union) staged a statewide protest against big dams and burnt effigies of NHPC today.

Talking to the media, AASU adviser Samujjal Bhattacharjya said, "We are not opposed to development. However, we oppose big dams that harm people downstream. The security of people downstream of the NHPC's dam across Subansiri is at stake as the Central Government ignored the recommendations of the local experts. The Central and the State governments do not dare to confront the truth of science."

Demanding the closure of the Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Project, Bhattacharjya said, "The AASU will not tolerate the government playing with the security of the people of Assam. We are not opposed to development. We only oppose big dams posing a threat to the people downstream."

Guwahati district committee of the AASU also staged a protest in the capital city.
