GUWAHATI: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has taken out a cycle rally on Saturday in protest against the government’s recent decision to introduce English as the medium of instruction in Classes VI in Science and Mathematics. Students from various sub-divisions of the state have participated in the rally, except the flood-affected areas. This rally is part of the month-long protest announced by the AASU earlier.

The AASU has been protesting against the government’s decision to publish textbooks for Science and Mathematics in the English language and impart knowledge of these subjects in the same language and not in the vernacular languages.

The AASU has made it clear that the Assamese language and medium, the Bodo Language and medium, and other indigenous languages and mediums should be secured. This agitation will not stop until the demands are met. AASU’s in-charge president, Utpal Sarma, and general secretary, Shankar Jyoti Baruah, in a statement, said, Earlier, the decision to teach Science and Mathematics in English was from Classes III, but later it was imposed on Classes VI, which has made the parents worried. They reiterated that the decision of the government to teach Mathematics and Science in English is detrimental to the growth of Assamese, Bodo, and other local languages. The government should withdraw its decision to impart teaching in the English language in Science and Mathematics. It also demanded that books in Assamese, Bodo, and other vernacular languages be circulated to the schools. They said this agitation will not end until schools start imparting teaching in their respective vernacular languages.”
