GUWAHATI: The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) will stage a protest programme throughout the State on October 13 against the plan of the State Government to hike property tax and against the spiralling prices of essential commodities.
AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath and general secretary Sankor Jyoti Baruah said, "The unchecked hike in the prices of essential commodities has made life miserable for the common people. The government has totally failed to check price hike. Under such circumstances, the plan of the government to hike property tax will be an additional burden on the people already reeling under price rise. The government must roll-back its anti-people policies and unless it does so, our agitation will continue."
In another press statement, the AASU president and general secretary reacted to the controvery over the staging of the play Lobhita by Abahan Theatre. "A distorted version of Rupkonwar Jyoti Prasad Agarwala's masterpiece Lobhita will never be accepted. It is an insult to Rupkonwar Jyoti Prasad Agarwala."
