GUWAHATI: All Assam Tribal Sangha (AATS) and Coordination Committee of Tribal Organizations of Assam (CCTOA) welcome the eviction drive at the Purbanchal Cement Company factory at Sarutari under Sonapur revenue circle. AATS Secretary General Aditya Khakhlari said Purbanchal Cement Company established a factory, and the production of cement continued through its duplicate registration paper that had mutated 100 hectares of land at Sarutari under the Sonapur revenue circle, which is unsurveyed land in the South Kamrup Tribal Belt.

He said, “For evicting this factory, we organized various protest programmes and also submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister of Assam for his interference. In 2021, a case WP(c) 4761/2021 was registered in the Gauhati High Court. And on September 6, 2022, a verdict was given to Kamrup (M) DC and the circle officer of Sonapur Revenue Circle to inquire into the matter and take legal action. Now, after the court’s order on April 28, 2023, the Kamrup (M) administration has decided to evict the area. And we welcome this decision. We also demand that the main plant of the cement company be evicted and that the tribal belt be freed.
