GUWAHATI: The main door of Kamakhya Temple in the Nilachal Hills of Guwahati was opened for devotees after the end of annual Ambubachi Mela on Sunday.
After the conduction of all the rituals, the temple door was opened to devotees and a mass of worshippers have flocked to the temple to seek Goddess Kamakhya's blessings.
According to sources in the Tourism Department, around 24,000 devotees attended the Mela on the first day yesterday. The sources attributed the decrease in the number of devotees to multiple factors such as Covid-19, the flood situation in the State and non-plying of special Ambubachi Mela trains from various parts of the country. Moreover, the curbs imposed on plying of private vehicles to the shrine have also contributed to the comparative fewer number of devotees, the sources added.
Celebrated in the monsoons, it is believed that Goddess Kamakhya goes through her menstrual cycle during the Ambubachi festival and, therefore, the temple remains closed.
