APCC alleges threat to candidates, moves State Election Commissioner

GUWAHATI: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has alleged a campaign to intimidate its candidates and consequently urged the State Election Commissioner (SEC) to ensure that the ensuing municipality board eections in the State are conducted in a free and fair manner.

APCC general secretary (administration) Apurba Kumar Bhattacharjee stated in a letter to SEC Alok Kumar that Congress candidates for the municipality board elections "are facing provocation and threats of life along with their family members from the Opposition political party. Ruling political party leaders are engaging their fellow party workers to mentally harass the Congress candidates and even at some places gherao the houses of INC (Indian National Congress) contesting candidates and are mounting tremendous pressure on them to withdraw their nominations."

Moreover, Bhattacharjee alleged in his letter, supporters of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are asking voters to take a photo with their mobile phones while casting their votes, to substantiate their support to the BJP.

"It is totally against the procedure of election and it will have to be stopped," the Congress leader wrote while requesting the SEC to direct the local administrations not to allow the voters to carry mobile phones or any such digital device inside the polling station, in accordance with election guidelines and the Model Code of Conduct.
