GUWAHATI: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) initiated a Raj Bhawan gherao programme on Monday against the withdrawal of SPG security to the Gandhi family and former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh. The party was supposed to rally from Lakhinath Bezboruah Chowk to Raj Bhawan, however, due to security intervention, they staged a dharna at Lakhinath Bezboruah Chowk itself.

A delegation led by party president Ripun Bora, visited Raj Bhawan and through the Governor, submitted a memorandum to the President of India.

The memorandum read that after the former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was brutally killed during her office tenure, the Government of India decided for SPG security coverage for Rajiv Gandhi, which when withdrawn, resulted in Rajiv Gandhi being killed by extremists. After this, the SPG security procedure was modified by Atal Bihari Vajpayee which covered former Prime Ministers and their family members.

But since the SPG security coverage was suddenly withdrawn for Dr Manmohan Singh and the Gandhi family without reason, the party strongly opposed the move of the BJP government.

“We the APCC think that this is nothing but a political vendetta and would like an explanation that on what basis was the SPG security coverage withdrawn from Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, whose life security are always in a most vulnerable stage,” read the memorandum. “We urge the President to intervene into this most serious matter and restore the SPG security coverage and desist the Government from such narrow and nasty political vendetta and cruelty to the family members of the Gandhi Parivaar.”
