GUWAHATI: The Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (ASCPCR) organized a two-day zonal level training programme on child rights issues for school administrators, teachers, child welfare police officers and members of the Special Juvenile Police Unit in the city from Wednesday, stated a press release.
The programme began with a training session for the school administrators and teachers.
Dr Sunita Changkakati, chairperson of the commission, welcomed the participants and shared her experiences of child rights violations, especially those pertaining to corporal punishment, mental harassment of children and how teachers come to play an important role in safeguarding the rights of children.
Rupa Hazarika, member of the commission, spoke about how traumatic experiences faced by children in schools and at homes need to be identified so that they do not hamper the mental health of children and do not deprive them of their rights.
A brief presentation was made by Nandinee Das, technical consultant, ASCPCR, about the powers and functions of the commission.
Babita Saikia, legal consultant of Bachpan Bachao Andolan, spoke about the legal safeguards for prevention of child abuse with reference to the Juvenile Justice (Amendment) Act, 2021 and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Amendment,) Act, 2019. Pilu Hazarika, member of the commission, spoke about the roles and responsibilities of teachers on prevention of child abuse in society and Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2019, with special reference to corporal punishment. The second day of the training programme on Thursday was participated in by the child welfare police officers and members of the Special Juvenile Police Unit. Surendra Kumar, IPS, explained to the participants about the legal safeguards for prevention of child abuse with special reference to JJ Act and POSO Act and Implemnentation of legal provisions relating to child protection and roles and responsibilities of the police.
