GUWAHATI: With the BJP stepping up it groundwork with an eye on the Lok Sabha (LS) elections of 2024, its alliance partners Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) are targeting to contest at least three of the 14 House of People's Constituencies (HPCs) in the State.
According to AGP sources, the party had allied with the BJP and contested three seats in 2019 - Kaliabor, Barpeta and Dhubri. The demographic in these seats was, however, not favourable for the BJP-AGP alliance and all the party candidates lost the elections.
This time around, the AGP is planning to approach the BJP to allot at least two seats, out of which at least one should have a favourable demographic pattern.
Meanwhile, sources in the UPPL said that the party will seek to contest the Kokrajhar Lok Sabha seat.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP had alliance with the Bodoland People's Front (BPF), which contested and lost the Kokrajhar seat. This time, the UPPL will seek this seat by dint of being a partner of the BJP-led State Government.
It may be mentioned one legislator of the UPPL is a Cabinet Minister of the State at present.
