GUWAHATI: Within days of the Kharghuli water pipeline burst incident, which claimed one and injured many, another similar incident took place in Maligaon. The incident took place at around 10:30–11 AM on Monday. Local people mentioned that this was the third time that such a leak has happened in the locality, and the previous one took place three days ago.

The local people of Maligaon raised questions as to how such an incident could happen for the third time in the locality and why the concerned authorities have not taken any preventive action even after the major disaster in Kharghuli. They also expressed fear that if such an incident takes place in a busy locality like Maligaon, the damages will be way worse compared to the Kharghuli incident.

The Maligaon region is already suffering from traffic woes, and now this incident of leakage of the water pipes has left the citizens concerned. Meanwhile, several families affected by the incident in Kharghuli are still housed in the relief camp set up by the district administration, and the victims raised questions regarding the sincerity of the intentions of the government towards the rebuilding of their houses.

One such victim mentioned, “That incident has left us homeless, and we have not seen much effort from the government side towards our rehabilitation. Ashok Singhal visited us once and ensured that everything would be taken care of soon, but he has not visited ever since. The DC is visiting us regularly, but no effort has been seen regarding the relocation.” Another member of the relief camp said, “We cannot continue in a relief camp forever; how can we send our children to school from here? All our belongings, including the necessary documents, were damaged. But we see no serious efforts in that direction. The qualities of the construction materials and labour should be up to the mark so as to prevent repetitions of such incidents.”
