GUWAHATI: School teachers working away from their home districts for over ten years will get a chance for transfer to their home districts or nearer districts with the passage of ‘The Assam Elementary and Secondary School Teachers (Regulation of Posting and Transfer) (Amendment) Bill, 2023’ in the State Assembly today.
During the discussion on the Bill, Education Minister Ranoj Pegu said, “The teachers opted for the districts of their choice at the time of their appointment. As per the amended Act, those who have been working away from their home districts for over ten years can apply for transfer. However, the Government will strictly keep vigil on the PTR (pupil-teacher ratio). Transferring is not a right. However, the government has taken such a step out of benevolence. However, the teachers who opt for transfer will lose their seniority in the new institution. Officers transferring teachers in violation of the rules under the amended Act will have to pay up to Rs 1 lakh as a fine.” Many Opposition members took part in the discussion.
