GUWAHATI: It's a boon for non-resident Assamese staying elsewhere in the country that each and every Assam Bhawan will have a shelf of Assamese books, for sale. It's the Axam Xahitya Xabha (AXX) that has made this possible.

The process has already set in motion. On Monday AXX president and Sahitya Akademi Award-winning writer Dr. Kuladhar Saikia handed over bunches of selected books published by the Xabha to the Joint Resident Commissioner of Mumbai Assam Bhawan, Debashish Sarma at the AXX office here.

Of late, a drive to reach readers has been underway in the AXX. Dr Saikia said that the Xabha has already opened a book stall each at its Dubrugarh office and Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakhetra in Guwahati, for sale.

"The shelf of Assamese books at Assam Bhawan, Mumbai will enable non-resident Assamese staying in the commercial capital of the country to read books in their mother tongue. Making Assamese books available for readers outside the State is a matter of pride for us. Such non-resident Assamese readers can also popularize Assamese books among the speakers of other languages.

"We're now communicating with the authorities of all Assam Bhawans in the country for opening shelves for Assamese books there."

Commenting on the move currently underway, Debashis Sarma said, "Apart from non-resident Assamese, this book shelf is also going to benefit patients and their attendants going to Mumbai for better treatment, to a great extent."
