GUWAHATI: The Assam Institute of Research for Tribals and Scheduled Castes, under the patronage of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs and in association with the Department of Tribal Affairs, celebrated the Janajatiya Gaurav Diwas to commemorate the birth anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda at Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra on Wednesday.

Tribal Affairs Minister (Plain), Dr. Ranoj Pegu, who attended as chief guest, said, "The contributions of Birsa Munda to the Indian independence movement are immeasurable. The Munda rebellion, also known as 'Ulugulan', was not just a fight for forest rights and the preservation of native religions and cultures but also a pivotal movement in the freedom struggle, aiming to awaken the suppressed consciousness of the Indian nation through brave resistance and self-sacrifice." The minister also extended his heartfelt thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for dedicating the birth anniversary of Birsa Munda to Janajatiya Gaurav Diwas.

Pegu said that "the Prime Minister has been able to solve the problems of the tribals and bring innovation to their lifestyles. He added that tribal people like to live in the bosom of nature and reside in harmony among their people. Where there are tribal people, there is beautiful nature. Being proud of one's language is something we should all strive for."

The event also honoured four esteemed senior social activists from the tribal community of Assam, namely Pandav Rabha, Padma Pator, Thaneswar Boro, and Nameswar Pegu.

The event was attended by All Assam Tribal Sangha secretary general Aditya Khaklari and secretary, Department of Tribal Affairs (Plain), Binita Pegu.
