GUWAHATI: The Assam College Teachers' Association (ACTA) has opposed to the decision to relocate the UGC's Guwahati regional office to New Delhi and has urged that it be reestablished in Guwahati. ACTA's President, Himangshu Maral, said the regional office in Guwahati was serving a lot of universities as well as college-related work in Assam and the Northeast. So, we are worried over the decision to relocate the regional office. For the sake of development in the education sector, the regional office should be in Guwahati. And in this regard, Assam's Chief Minister and Education Minister should take certain steps.

It may be mentioned, that the UGC (University Grants Commission) closed its regional office in Guwahati. UGC's Joint Secretary, Professor Rajesh Kumar Verma, informed all principals of colleges in the Northeast in a letter that UGC's 'North Eastern Regional Office (NERO) in Guwahati has been relocated to the UGC New Delhi office. Hence, all the communications pertaining to NERO, Guwahati, are now sent to the New Delhi UGC office'.
