GUWAHATI: Manjit Mahanta, a well-known journalist and politician noted for his considerable achievements in both disciplines, has died. On July 10, around 2 a.m., the renowned journalist and politician died at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).

Manjit Mahanta established a fantastic route throughout his distinguished career, demonstrating his amazing skills and unrelenting dedication. His incisive reporting and perceptive analysis garnered him great fame and respect, and he had a tremendous impact on the discipline of journalism. As a journalist, he chased the truth with zeal, putting light on pressing issues and holding those in power accountable.

He had started his journalism career with Ajir Axom, the Assamese daily form the Sentinel Group and later on served as the executive editor. 

Mahanta's talents in journalism were not limited to the field of politics, where he made substantial contributions to public service. His desire to solve social concerns and effect positive change compelled him to actively participate in political activities, increasing his power and impact on society. Manjit Mahanta's vibrant personality and smart political acumen earned him a high level of respect in the political world.

According to sources, Manjit Mahanta's mortal remains would be carried from GMCH to his residence in Geetanagar.

In 2021, Manjit Mahanta, the leader of the Anchalik Gana Morcha, joined the Congress party, while Mehdi Alam Bora, who had previously left the party and joined the BJP, rejoined it.

In 2020, Assam Police have charged senior journalist Manjit Mahanta for sedition.

According to reports, a complaint (number 158/2020) was registered against Mahanta at Tinsukia police station under sections 120 (B), 121 (A), 121, 294, 353, 505 and 34 of the Indian PenalCode (IPC) for his comments on the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

Suo motu, police lodged a case against Mahanta for his comments on the CAA during a gathering in Panitola, Tinsukia district. Manjit Mahanta told the media that he received a letter on Tuesday directing him to appear at the Geetanagar Police Station in Guwahati. He was facing six to seven CrPC offences.
