GUWAHATI: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has accused the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led Government of "failing miserably" to deal with the current flood situation in the State.

A statement issued by the APCC on Wednesday mentioned that while Prime Minister Narendra Modi frequently visits Assam to seek votes before elections but he has not remembered the people of the State during this time of distress.

"The Union Ministers who come to Assam, including the Union Home Minister, are totally forgetting 'Ashtalakshmi' of the North-East," the APCC stated and mentioned that 32 districts out of 35 districts of the State are submerged by flood now, affecting more than 55 lakh people.

"134 people have already lost their lives in floods, erosion and landslides. The National Highway and embankments have become a last resort for the common people today. The condition of livestock, cattle, buffaloes, pigs, goats, etc., is indescribable. All kinds of crops are destroyed in the fields. The houses of countless people have been washed away by floods and many of them are unhygienic to live in."

The APCC statement further alleged that the BJP party and the Government are "trivializing the people who are reeling under floods," and accused them of adopting an "escapist attitude in the time of public crisis."

The APCC statement claimed the Centre did not provide sufficient funds to Assam for disaster mitigation in 2018-19 and 2019-20. In 2020-21, the amount provided by the Centre was only Rs 44.37 crore, the statement added.

The APCC statement further mentioned that the Congress party is providing adequate assistance to needy people, adding that relief materials have been already sent by 21 vehicles to different parts of the State.
