Assam Floods: Water Receding, Flood Toll 60

GUWAHATI: The flood toll in the State has reached 60 even as the water level has started receding. After reviewing the flood situation on Friday with the Chief Secretary and other senior officials, Governor Jagdish Mukhi visited Dhubri on Saturday and made an aerial survey of Kamrup, Goalpara, South Salmara and Dhubri districts. He met the inmates of three relief camps in Gouripur and Dhubri and instructed the district officials to render all possible help to the flood affected people.

The water levels in some districts have been receding. As on Saturday, 3,024 villages in 77 revenue circles of 24 districts – Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Sonitpur, Darrang, Barpeta, Nalbari, Chirang, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, South Salmara, Goalpara, Kamrup, Kamrup (M), Morigaon, Nagaon, KarbiAnglong, Golaghat, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Cachar, and Karimganj – are having flood waters affecting a population of 44,08,142. At present 689 relief camps are operational.

A total of 12 persons have lost their lives due to flood in Nalbari (1), Barpeta (3), Dhubri (1), Morigaon (5) and South Salmara (2) in the past 24 hours. In this season, the total loss of human lives has risen to 60 persons in flood and two persons in landslide.

Even as the water level is receding at many places in many rivers, yet the situation is still grim. Around 53,52,107 people of 4,128 villages in 103 revenue circles have been affected in 28 districts in the State by the current wave of flood. At present, 689 relief camps are operational in various flood-affected districts with 2,25,737 inmates. A total of 212122.74-hectare crops, 25,18,825 animals and 22,59,413 poultry have been affected by the floods.
