GUWAHATI: The Assam government is going to recommence the eviction drive at Silsako Beel tomorrow onward. Silsako Beel is a wetland which serves as a reservoir basin for the storm water run-off from the city of Guwahati.

The government is concerned about minimizing the storm floods in Guwahati by starting the eviction drive immediately. The government has already ordered to evict encroachers from the area. The district administration, GMDA (Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority) and the police are ready for the drive.

GMDA Chairman Narayan Deka informed the media that about 1200 out of 1800 bigha is under encroachment. He also said that the eviction of the whole area is not possible at this moment. But the light encroachment on a canal running through the beel will be removed. An area of 100 metre on each side of the canal will be evicted, displacing nearly 200 to 250 families.
