GUWAHATI: The Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has registered many cases on several important issues and started investigations. Shantanu Bharali, the newly appointed Member of the State Human Rights Commission, has taken very seriously the issue of harassment of the general public by third-gender persons in various parts of Guwahati for some time. The Human Rights Commission has called on the Assam Police and the jail authorities to submit a report in this regard. The commission has also registered cases against the deaths of two people at Oil India premises in Narengi, the death of Rinku Haloi at Nalbari Medical College due to a lack of oxygen, and the illness of many students after consuming a medicine for worms at Ganesh Mandir High School in Khanapara.

There have been allegations in newspapers, electronic media, and social media in various parts of Guwahati that third genders have been harassing people for money. On April 21, a young girl was reportedly assaulted by a third gender near Ganeshguri. Last year, there were reports of a fight between two such groups in Maligaon. In addition, the State Human Rights Commission member, Bharali, took up the case on his own and raised several questions to the Director General of Assam Police. The state commission asked the police to submit reports on whether there are special arrangements in police stations or jails to keep third-gender people, how many such cases have been registered so far, and whether anyone has been arrested. The commission said it would keep the case at this stage and take action against the third gender in the future.

The State Human Rights Commission (SHHRC) has also registered a case against the death of two people due to electrocution at the Oil India premises and the illness of people after eating imported fish in Dhupdhara in Goalpara district.

The State Human Rights Commission has taken up more than 20 suo moto cases in the past week. The newly appointed member, Bharali, has been appreciated by the public. The commission also held the municipal corporation accountable for not cleaning up the garbage on Lamb Road in Guwahati.
