GUWAHATI: The Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance about the alleged police atrocities on students in Dibrugarh recently.

The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) had asked the AHRC to register a suo-motu case over police atrocities on students and their leaders. The AASU said that members of the organization took part in a sit-in near the Sadar Police Station, Dibrugarh, against police atrocities on AASU activists and defilement of martyr's column.

AASU president Dipankar Kumar Nath, said that Dibrugarh Superintendent of Police and his team pounced on AASU activists at the district office of the student body and defiled the martyr's column. The police also allegedly beat the AASU members and arrested five members.

The AHRC has directed the District Magistrate, Dibrugarh to conduct an inquiry into the incident and submit the report within a month.
