Guwahati: Snehankar Chakraborty, a resident of Biswanath is on a mission.

The former journalist has decided to go on a 1000 km bicycle ride across Assam to spread the word regarding the social safety and security of journalists.

Earlier, he had completed a 300 km ride to raise awareness about the same issue.

His initiative gains significance as it comes in the backdrop of the recent death of a senior journalist, Parag Bhuyan of Tinsukia.

Bhuyan was hit by a speeding car near his house in Kakpathar and questions were being raised if this was not just an accident but a killing.

Snehankar started his ride on Tuesday at 5 am from Biswanath to Dhola Sadiya, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Jorhat, and Kaliabor among other places to complete his 1000km.

He along with many journalists has been protesting for the past few days for the journalist's social security.

A journalist said, "Atrocities have been going on above the journalists in many places of Assam. They have been facing many problems while reporting or collecting news."

Journalists were seen holding posters. Some of the posters read, "We are there for you but Is there anybody for us?"

Snehankar said," recently we have lost our journalist Parag Bhuyan and the investigation is on."

They also raised slogans saying, 'attacks on journalists will not be tolerated', 'provide journalists with immediate and proper protection'.

Snehankar has previously worked as a long-time Deputy Editor in both the print and electronic media. At that time too, he used to spread awareness on various issues.

He was greeted by the people of Vishwanath for the initiative he has taken for the social security awareness of all the journalists of the state.

Hridayananda Das, the proprietor of the Champion's Maker Academy of Assam Nationalist Youth Student Council, an international artist of Khasam along with many others has expressed their support and wished Snehankar luck.
