GUWAHATI: The All Assam Primary and Upper Primary School Midday Meal (Pradhan Mantri Poshan) Workers' Union has appealed to the State Government to regularize their remuneration and release their pending dues.

Addressing the media, the organization's working president, Jiten Rabha said that 1,20,000 cooks and helpers of the State are associated with the scheme, which was launched in 2005. Their remuneration was increased to Rs 1,000 per month with effect from December 2009. Subsequently, their remuneration was increased by Rs 500 per month from April, 2021. He said that these workers receive remuneration for only 10 months each year despite working five-six hours each day.

However, Rabha said, they received only Rs 1,000 instead of Rs 1,500 each in January this year and not a single penny for the last seven months.

Rabha demanded that apart from releasing their pending dues, the State Government should pay them remuneration for all the 12 months of the year instead of just 10 months. He said that the union also demands that their services should be regularized by issuing appointment letters and also that that their remuneration should be increased to Rs 5,000 per month.
