GUWAHATI: On account of Karam Puja, i.e., September 25, which is declared a paid holiday, the tea workers do not have to work on any other day. The Labour and Welfare Department issued a notification with a partial modification.
Earlier, a notification was issued on September 15, and through the notification, September 25 was declared a paid holiday on account of Karam Puja in tea plantations, including tea factories. The notice also mentioned that, in lieu of the holiday, the garden workers will work on any other garden holiday or weekly day of rest, to be decided by the respective tea garden management.
Regarding the notification, there was resentment among the tea communities, which demanded to declare Karam Puja a normal holiday. After that, the department modified its notification and made changes so that the workers do not have work on garden holidays or weekly days.
