GUWAHATI: The Assam Police busted a human-trafficking racket in Haryana on Saturday and arrested nine members of the gang, including a woman.
Police sources said that the gang kidnapped women of various age groups from Assam and sold them in other States for Rs 3 lakh each.
The sources identified the arrested human traffickers as Aleka Begum, Akher Ali, Asraful Alom, Saddam Hussain, Jainur Ali, Azad Hussain, Delbar Hussain, Nur Mohammad and Anuwar Hussain.
The police also rescued two girls hailing from Barpeta and Mangaldai from the gang's captivity, the sources added.
It is relevant to mention that human trafficking has emerged as a major problem in the State in recent years. Data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) reveals that Assam registered the third-highest number of human trafficking cases in 2021. Over 203 cases of human trafficking were registered in 2021, as compared to 124 cases in 2020. As per the NCRB data, as many as 460 victims were trafficked from the State in 2021, while 425 victims were rescued.
Police sources said that people are routinely trafficked illegally from the State for various purposes such as commercial sexual exploitation, forced labour, forced marriage and domestic servitude.
