GUWAHATI: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhupen Kumar Borah has criticized the BJP-led Central and State Governments and alleged that the State Government's economic situation is deteriorating day by day.

Borah claimed in a statement on Monday that many fuel depots have refused to supply fuel to the police due to non-payment of previous arrears. The city's administration has also been paralyzed by the Central Government's failure to release regular funds to many departments, he said, adding that it is hence necessary to take measures to protect the lives and property of the people.

"Many police stations are unable to use vehicles due to lack of funds to perform their regular duties. Theft and robbery incidents have increased at an unexpected rate in most cities of Assam, including Guwahati, in the past month. The people of Assam have already seen where the law-and-order system in cities and metropolises like Guwahati, Jorhat and Lakhimpur has been taken by indirectly giving license to thieves, robbers and murderers to roam free. Now, even the antisocial elements, thieves, robbers and murderers have realized that the Assam Police can no longer afford to run patrolling vehicles to stop them," Borah said.

Borah further said that Assam, which had previously received Rs 35-40 crore annually under the police modernization head, has received only slightly more than Rs 11 crore this year. Moreover, more than half of the year has passed and Assam has received only Rs 3 crore out of that Rs 11 crore so far. This proves how indifferent this BJP Government is towards the security of the lives and property of the people of Assam, he said.
