GUWAHATI: The Assam Police is observing Child Rights Week 2023, beginning with an essay competition for children on critical child protection issues. The police started the celebration with an essay-writing contest for children across the state. The essay-writing contest aims to offer a platform for children to express their views on two critical issues that affect adolescent children: cybercrime and child labour.

"The Sishu Mitra Programme is our initiative to provide justice for each and every child. This essay contest is aimed at making children a part of the change-making process and gathering feedback from young minds across the state to be able to sustainably address some of the most pressing challenges faced by children in today's day and age," said Harmeet Singh, Special Director General of Police, Assam Police Headquarters. This initiative is taken up under the 'Assam Police Sishu Mitra Programme', a flagship child-friendly policing programme anchored by the Assam Police in collaboration with UNICEF and the UTSAH Child Rights Organisation, the Special DGP said.

According to a press release, the first five winning essays would be published on the Assam Police social media handles and the Assam Police Sishu Mitra Journal, which would soon be released by the Assam Police. Child Rights Week, which began on November 14, 2023 (National Children's Day), would conclude on November 20, 2023 (World Children's Day). It aims to raise awareness about child rights and stress the importance of cultivating a safe and supportive environment for children nationally.
