GUWAHATI: The APCC (Assam Pradesh Congress Committee) has demanded a CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) and NIA (National Investigation Agency) probe in the cow smuggling cases.

In a statement, APCC general secretary and senior spokesperson Apurba Kumar Bhattacharya questioned why cattle smuggler Muzamil Haque was shot at in police custody?

"Haque was involved with the Congress before 2016 and currently he is a criminal. But we suspect that he was shot at to save the big fishes who are involved in the cow smuggling racket. Persons involved in international cow smuggling should be declared criminals and an impartial investigation should be initiated. No big fish should be able to escape from the law," said Bhattacharya.

The leader asserted that the Assam Police which is under the Home Department cannot conduct an impartial investigation into the cow smuggling cases.

"During the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) regime, cattle are being transported from Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh to Bangladesh through various districts of Assam. Transportation of cattle is not possible without the involvement of BJP leaders. An impartial investigation should be conducted through the NIA or the CBI," he added.
