GUWAHATI: In a recent development, big consignments of smuggled tobacco products were seized by Income Tax Department officials at the Guwahati Railway Station.
On Friday 4 March, the Income Tax Department seized all the smuggled tobacco items following leads about its illegal movement.
According to reports, the officials from the Income Tax Department of Assam conducted a sudden raid at the railway station located at the heart of Guwahati city following certain inputs.
On conducting the search operation, the officials got to know about the massive consignment of illegal tobacco items brought from another state of India.
It is reported that around 2,200 illicit huge 'Ghutka' cartons (boxes) were seized which were found in 3 different compartments of the train.
The seized items consisted of different varieties of tobacco products in huge quantities that belong to various brands.
The seized Ghutka items comprised of chewing tobacco varieties such as 'Bimal Pan Masala', 'Rajnigandha', Jarda' and 'Shikhar,'
As per reports this huge consignment was allegedly transported and brought to Assam's Guwahati city from the national capital Delhi.
The smuggled items of various tobacco brands were being moved without any valid payment of taxes and without appropriate documents as informed by officials.
Meanwhile, no arrest has been made till now in relation to the illegal trade of tobacco and in connection with the seized products in Guwahati Railway station.
However, an investigation has been initiated to find out the person behind the illegal tobacco smuggling in the state as the information is not ascertained yet.
It may be mentioned that most of the tobacco products are said to be banned in the state but the reality is different as such products are still sold in different regions.
Despite the ban put on it the sale of tobacco continues across Assam without much attention from the administration and other officials.
