Demand to scrap NPS and bring back OPS

GUWAHATI: The All Assam Government NPS Employees' Association reiterated its demand for scrapping the new National Pension System (NPS) in favour of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS), which was prevalent earlier in the state.

The association's president, Achutyananda Hazarika, said, "It is not only the responsibility but also the duty of the ruling political dispensation of the state to ensure the socio-economic security of the employees, in the interest of improving the administration in the state. The old pension system is the only yardstick for the socio-economic security of the teachers and employees in the state, who are the lynchpin of the governance system and the backbone of society. It is sad that the ruling dispensation has not shown any interest in the reintroduction of the old pension system, despite the strong public opinion in its favour. We expect a clear stand from the political rulers prior to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections."

In the event of their demand not being met, the teacher-workers' body threatened that 5 lakh state employees, 2 lakh central government employees, 1 lakh employees of the corporations, and their families and relatives would exercise their franchise as Indian citizens to express their opinion in the elections. In short, they threatened to vote for the political party that promised to implement the OPS.

Hazarika also said, "As different political parties are speaking of the re-introduction of OPS, we are organizing a central convention in Guwahati on November 27, where the leaders of the parties, senior journalists, and distinguished personalities will be present. During the convention, which will be held at Bhagawati Prasad Barua Sadan near Dighalipukhuri, we will press for our demands on the post-retirement security of the teachers-employees of the state and the re-introduction of OPS before the state and central government."
