GUWAHATI: Temporary workers associated with the piped water supply schemes (PWSS) under the Assam's Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department have demanded regularization of their services and have announced that they will resort to a cease-work programme if their various demands are not fulfilled. Addressing the media here on Thursday, office-bearers of the PHE Asthayee Sramik Karmachari Parikhod, Asom said that there are 8,904 temporary workers engaged in various PWSS under the PHE. They said that such temporary workers belong to families which donated land for setting up the respective PWSS. The office-bearers said that these temporary workers are as dubbed as 'volunteers', but they want that they should be designated as pump operators, plumbers, electricians, masons etc., as per their nature of work.
