ATC calls Assam- Arunachal Pradesh border agreement ‘meaningless’

GUWAHATI: An agreement was signed by the representatives from Assam and Arunachal Pradesh on Thursday in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah towards the resolution of the border conflicts between the two neighbouring states, and the Assam Trinamool Congress (ATC) has called this agreement to be meaningless.

Media department chairperson Dilip Kumar Sharma mentioned that this decision was taken just for political gains in the upcoming general elections. He also made a serious allegation that this agreement did not follow any rules and regulations and was an attempt to spread false propaganda regarding the settlement of the issues at the state borders.

He also mentioned that the Border Protection and Development Minister for Assam, Atul Bora, had reported that a total of 82 thousand hectares of land in Assam were encroached upon by Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Nagaland. Out of that, 16144.01 hectares were encroached on by Arunachal Pradesh, and he questioned what part of that land was recovered by this agreement since the announcement was that 60 villages were handed over instead of the 71 in demand.

Dilip Kumar Sharma questioned why the CM mentioned villages instead of the exact land calculations. He also mentioned that the representatives signing agreements in New Delhi do not solve the problems on the ground. Changes need to be made to the maps maintained by the Survey of India as well as the constitution to reflect the actual changes, and for that, the central government must make amendments to the constitution after the resolutions are passed at the state level and sent to the centre. And it has to be preceded by approvals at an all-party meeting, but none of them have been done yet.

Questioning the decision regarding handing over land to the neighbouring state, Dilip Kumar Sharma said that the Assam government should have approached the Supreme Court if Arunachal Pradesh was now ready to vacate the land belonging to Assam. He also called it a failure of the Border Protection and Development Ministry of Assam and the reason for the problems faced by the people in the bordering regions of both states.
