GUWAHATI: The Assam Tea Tribes Students' Association (ATTSA) has demanded the State government to fix Rs 351 as the minimum wage for the tea garden workers.
Slamming the State government for giving an increment of Rs 38 amounting to Rs 205 per day, the ATTSA said, "It was the State government itself which had declared on February 21, 2021, an interim amount of Rs 50 amounting to Rs 217 per day including a fringe benefit of Rs 101. But when the tea planters appealed in the Guwahati High Court the vide order of the government remained stay. ATTSA would have agreed at least if it would have been up to Rs 217 which was declared by the government before.
"The Assam Cha Majdoor Sangha (ACMS) and Bhartiya Cha Majdoor Sangha (BCMS) also demanded an increase up to Rs 351. But, unfortunately, both the labour organizations agreed to accept the increment of Rs 38 amounting to Rs 205 per day," the ATTSA said.
"The ATTSA will never agree with this decision and continue its demand and democratic agitations till the minimum wage of the tea garden workers are fixed as per prevailing law and in comparison or proportion with consumer price index and other dearness allowance," the body added.
