GUWAHATI: The Assam Tea Tribes Students' Association (ATTSA) submitted a memorandum to the State Chief Secretary Jishnu Barua demanding his intervention against the shifting of Tata Tea's corporate office — Amalgamated Plantations Private Limited (APPL) from Assam to Kolkata.

ATTSA president Dhiraj Gowala said that if the company is shifted to Kolkata than the tea workers of the State will be affected.

"There are 21 tea gardens under Tata Tea where 30,000 tea workers are engaged. These tea labourers are stakeholders of the APPL as they have invested Rs 8,000 each in the company. Firstly, they lured the tea workers to invest their money. However, after incurring losses, the company stopped giving the dividend funds to the workers," said Gowala.

He stressed that if the company is shifted from Assam it will be a loss for the tea industry.

"It will be a step against the State's policies. In the future, it will impact other tea gardens and tea auction centres," Gowala underlined.

The ATTSA has urged the Chief Secretary to take immediate steps to stop the company from shifting to Kolkata.
