GUWAHATI: Employees of the Axam Xahitya Xabha (AXX) have once again launched an agitation of indefinite duration in protest against non-payment of their salaries for more than five months.
Talking to The Sentinel, president of the Karmachari Kalyan Samity, Axam Xahitya Xabha, Kanak Deka said, "We have not been p[aid salaries for the last five months excluding this month. We have made repeated requests to the higher authorities for payment of our salaries, but we have not received any positive response. That is why we have had to undertake protest programme three times this year."
Deka further said that on the eighth day of their indefinite non-cooperation stir from December 5 last, they had a discussion with the office-bearers of the AXX on December 12 as per the invitation of the organization's president, Kuladhar Saikia. It was decided at the meeting that two months' pending salary of the employees would be released within one week and the remaining three months' salary would be paid after approval at the executive meeting of the AXX on December 24 next. However, the deadline of payment of two months' pending salary has not been met even though a week has elapsed, he said. Deka said that consequently the employees have been left with no option other than resuming their suspended non-cooperation agitation. The matter has been also intimated to former office-bearers of the AXX, the Sadou Asom Karmachari Parishad, the lawyers' fraternity, human rights activists and various organizations, Deka added.
He informed that at present 42 employees are working in ten AXX offices in various places – Jorhat, Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Nagaon, Diphu, Mangaldai, Jalahgaon in Baksa, North Lakhimpur, Dhubri and Silchar.
