GUWAHATI: To mark the occasion of International Day of Action for Rivers and as part of the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav campaign, the Ministry of Tourism (North-East) organized a river walk and clean-up drive addressing the issues related to river management, river pollution, river conservation etc., on Monday morning on the bank of the river Brahmaputra near Lachit Ghat, which is considered to be one of the most popular places to host a variety of events in the city.

The programme was organized to raise awareness about the need for cleanliness and to identify issues and actions that can be adopted to prevent the river from being destroyed.

The programme was attended by Partha Pratim Pathak, managing director of Fresh Air Waste Management Pvt Ltd and Hirak Jyoti Borah, founder president of Touch of Humanity, and student leaders. The programme was followed by the felicitation of guests and a speech by Pathak and Borah on how to recycle rubbish and reduce littering in public spaces, while maintaining the beauty of the location. Then a river walk and clean-up drive were organized on the bank of the Brahmaputra, which was participated in by the NSS students from B Borooah College. The programme also addressed various issues of concern: how biodegradable materials may also cause pollution, and what locals can do to make the river replete with aquatic animals. At the end of the programmed, trash collected from the drive was transported by the Fresh Air waste collection truck for recycling.
