KHANAPARA: More than 2,000 residential students of the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) have taken part in an 'Azadi March' organized on the occasion of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav at the university campus on Sunday.
A week-long programme commenced on August 9 at USTM for the celebration of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, stated a press release, adding that Dr Abdulaziz Al Musallam, Chairman of the Sharjah Institute for Heritage, UAE will hoist the National Flag as the chief guest on the occasion of the 76th Independence Day at main sports ground of USTM on Monday. A colourful cultural procession and cultural showcase of NE India will be held on the occasion at the Central Auditorium of the university. A special convocation will also be held.
Along with the whole nation, USTM is celebrating the 75th year of India's Independence and the Tricolour is flying high everywhere in and around the campus, raising patriotic spirit among thousands of students and each and every member of the university. On August 12, a large group of students, including seven units of the NSS Cell, organized a bike rally for distribution of National Flags among villagers within a 5-km radius of the university to materialize the dream of 'Har Ghar Tiranga, Har Ghar Shiksha'.
Meanwhile, different departments of the USTM have been celebrating the grand occasion under their departmental initiatives. For instance, members of the department of Rural Development visited a Rehabilitation Center at Shantivan, Nongpoh and conducted an awareness programme on health and hygiene and distributed sanitary items like soap, handwash, sanitizers and sanitary pads to promote the habit of cleanliness and healthy lifestyle. They also visited the District Jail, Ri-Bhoi and organized a workshop on skill-based courses for jail inmates, and distributed National Flags and light refreshment. On Sunday, they visited the District Civil Hospital and conducted an awareness drive about post-natal health among the mothers in the hospital.
The Department of Earth Science distributed free school kits to the needy schoolchildren at Noksikgittim village of the Ri-bhoi district. Tiranga distribution was also done in the same village to children and parents. The department also organized a free health check-up for the children of the village. Likewise, the other departments of USTM are also observing the week-long celebration to raise the spirit of patriotism.
