Bharatiya Janata Party, allies get head start in civic body polls

GUWAHATI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies have got a head start in the municipal board elections race, with their candidates winning uncontested in 56 out of 977 wards before voting takes place on March 6.

According to the State BJP, they are already in a position to form the municipal boards under their leadership in North Guwahati, Lumding and Sotea. BJP candidates have won uncontested in seven out of 10 wards in the North Guwahati Municipal Board, seven out of 13 wards in Lumding and seven out of 10 wards in Sotea.

The BJP is contesting in 883 municipal board wards across the State, leaving 92 seats for its allies.

A statement issued by the State BJP here on Sunday mentioned that the virtual walkover in North Guwahati, Lumding and Sotea bear testimony to the fact that the Congress and other Opposition parties are gradually becoming redundant in Assam.

It further said that BJP candidates are becoming increasingly acceptable among the public because of the brisk development and welfare activities taking place in urban areas under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. As a result, the very existence of Opposition parties has come under threat, the statement said.

It may be mentioned that there are 6,308 voters in the North Guwahati municipal area, including 3,376 women and 2,932 men.

On the other hand, there are 4,030 voters in the Palashbari municipal area, including 2,076 women and 1,954 men.
