GUWAHATI: The inter-state car theft gang still runs rampant in the country. As per a Special Task Force (STF) investigation, the issue is severe in North Indian areas of Hariyana, Delhi, UP, etc, where luxury cars are stolen, their thesis numbers tampered with and sold after re-registration in Assam and Meghalaya.
During an STF raid at Shimlaguri in Barpeta district on Wednesday, one Ajay Kalita, 29, was arrested and acting upon his confessions, a stolen Fortuner (AS 18 E 0786) from Chandigarh was recovered from Matia in Goalpara district. The stolen vehicle was re-registered. On May 15, under another STF raid in Geetanagar, a Fortuner vehicle, stolen from Hariyana, a Swift Dezire car, stolen from UP and a Honda Manza were recovered, while two thieves were caught. The thieves have been identified as Ajay Ghosh, 26, from Dimapur and Ashish Debnath, 27, from Dimapur. These two are under Judicial Custody. Meanwhile, an STF case (03/19 U/S 379/ 411/ 420/ 468/ 471) has been registered against Ajay Kalita. He was produced before CJM court and taken into two days police remand.
