Guwahati: A youth was caught stealing from Assam's premier Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic that is keeping healthcare personnel extremely busy. The shocking theft was recorded on CCTV cameras on Friday, which has eventually led to the arrest of the culprit.
The young boy, who was caught stealing bags from inside the hospital, would have got away with it too had he not been spotted by surveillance cameras. The CCTV footage shows the boy casually strolling into the hospital. He then asks for some Betadine solution from the medical attendant and quietly walks to the other side of the room. He is seen walking out of the medical room with a pink backpack, which he had stolen from the hospital.
The thief was caught on Friday after the incriminating CCTV footage caught the attention of the hospital administration who ended up alerting the cops.
Speaking to media, Dr Abhijit Sarma, Superintendent, GMCH said that several thefts have been reported from the hospital premises as well as from the hostel of GMC over the past few days. Many boarders, patients, and medical staff of GMCH has complained about their bags, wallets, and mobile phones going missing, Sarma said.
The boy, who has been handed over to the authorities, is suspected to be involved in several thefts in the GMCH premises. The youth in question is being interrogated and further investigation is underway.
