Meji is a cone-shaped structure made of bamboo, hay, straw, thatch and other such material. In city life, it is difficult to get the materials or the space to make a meji in its traditional way. Making things easy for all those city dwellers who want to enjoy Magh Bihu in its traditional manner without going through the hassles, Satej Assam has started selling ready-made mejis.
Three sizes of mejis are being sold in the shop. The biggest size would cost you Rs 2000, Rs 1500 for a medium-sized and the small size would come for Rs 1200.
For the mejis being made in Satej Assam (shop), the bamboo is being brought from Sarabhati area of the city, the hay is from nearby villages, the workers take about 7 hours to build one meji.
Magh Bihu also called as Bhogali Bihu is a harvest festival of Assam celebrated in the Assamese month of Magh which would mean January 14 or 15. The bihu starts at early dawn with a ceremony of burning mejiĀ As a tradition before setting up the fire in meji people take bath and while burning the meji people pray to their ancestral gods for blessings. The day before the Magh Bihu is called as 'Uruka' which means to end, signifying the end of the harvesting season.
