GUWAHATI: Apart from taking hefty bribes for illegal appointment of Gaon Burahs, the then Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of South Salmara-Mankachar, Saibar Rahman had also amassed a huge sum of money by allotting Government land to ineligible persons in lieu of cash.

This has been discovered by the Chief Minister's Special Vigilance Cell (CMSVC) during its investigation into the matter.

According to sources, while the Government decision was to allot land to around 500 landless families in that district during 2018-2020, nearly 1,700 persons were allotted land in South Salmara-Mankachar during the period. Of these, most beneficiaries were actually ineligible and included Government employees.

What is more, a single individual was allotted as much as four bighas of land. Moreover, the beneficiaries included some persons who had not gone through the formality of applying for land allotment.

It may be mentioned that five persons, including Saibar Rahman, have been arrested so far in this case (No. 07/2021)
