GUWAHATI: Child rights activist and founder of UTSAH, a non-profit organization working for child protection, Miguel Das, has been appointed by the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) as support person for the victim of the child abuse case involving doctor couple Dr Sangeeta Datta and Dr Walliul Islam. CWC has appointed him as support person under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POSCO) Act. He will remain in charge for legal assistance for the minor victims until they are rehabilitated.

The child abuse case came to light recently when Miguel Das through a post on Facebook informed that for a long time he had been receiving complaints about the doctor couple who regularly tied their 3-year-old-girl on their terrace in the blaring summer heat. After receiving the complaints, he said that he had requested the witnesses to file a complaint. However, no one was willing to come forward as they were scared because the doctor couple used to threaten them.

Finally on May 6, based on complaint of a neighbour, the Paltan Bazar Police and Child Line rescued the child. Paltan Bazar police registered a case (193/23 under Section 307/326 r/w Section 75 of the Juveline Justice Act) and arrested Dr Waliul Islam and caretaker Lakshmi Rai. Dr Sangeeta Datta, who was on the run, was caught by the Guwahati police in a house in the Ri-Bhoi district of Meghalaya, near Khanapara, later.

The couple seemed to have taken sadistic pleasure in hurting the three-year-old girl and a boy of the same age, whom they claimed to be their children. However, investigation revealed that both are not biological children of the couple. Both the children were also sexually assaulted, confirmed medical examination of the children by a team of medical experts.

In the latest development in the case, the DNA examination of Dr Walliul Islam was conducted on Tuesday. Sources also said that police interrogated the woman in whose house Dr Sangeeta Datta was hiding before she was arrested.
