CID registers disproportionate assets case against former Dhula PS OC

Former officer in-charge of Dhula Police Station, Sub Inspector Utpal Bora, who is an accused in the sensational rape and murder of a minor domestic maid at Dhula in the Darrang district last year, is in for more trouble.

GUWAHATI: Former officer in-charge of Dhula Police Station, Sub Inspector Utpal Bora, who is an accused in the sensational rape and murder of a minor domestic maid at Dhula in the Darrang district last year, is in for more trouble.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has registered a disproportionate assets case against him vide CID PS Case No. 1/2023 U/S 120B r/w 109 IPC and sec 13(2) r/w 13(1)(b) of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. His wife has also been named as an accused in this case.

During investigation it came to light that SI Utpal Bora had purchased a luxurious SUV MG Gloster vehicle at a cost of Rs 33.93 lakh in December 2020 in his name. Further, he had also purchased a housing plot of 3 kathas at Pachim Boragaon, Guwahati at a cost of Rs 48 lakh in the name of his wife in March, 2022. He has booked an apartment with 2,950 sq. ft. of build-up area in September, 2020 at a total cost of Rs 45 lakh which is now under construction and as per the payment conditions in the agreement, 95 per cent of the cost appears to have been paid to the builder so far. There are also cash balances in his SB accounts to the tune of Rs 5.23 lakh at ICICI Bank, Barpeta branch, and Rs 17.5 lakhs at SBI, New Guwahati Branch.

During the check period, his known source of income was only Rs. 13.3 lakh and he had incurred an expenditure of Rs. 6.74 lakh towards household expenditure, registration fee and stamp duty and road tax for the luxury vehicle. As such, he is in possession of disproportionate assets to the tune of Rs. 1.26 crore which is more than 947% of his known sources of income.
