GUWAHATI: Several organizations, including the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) and All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS), organized a Manipur Solidarity Day across the State on Tuesday. They called on all peace-loving people to unite to end the brutal killings in Manipur.
The organizations staged sit-ins in Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Nalbari, Goreswar, Nagaon, Tezpur, Bishwanath, Dhubri, Goalpara, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Silchar and several other places in Assam with several leaders and members of the organization taking part in the same. They mentioned that the conflict which started early in May is now almost three months old but no action has been taken regarding controlling the situation and there is a deep conspiracy regarding the recent events towards plundering the natural resources of the state.
CITU State general secretary Tapan Sharma, Assam State Farmers’ Assembly president Tiken Das, SFI state leader Anuja Deka, DYFI joint secretary Nirankush Nath, Assam State Agricultural Workers’ Union secretary Nayan Bhuyan and JCTU convener Bharendra Balita were present for the protests and mentioned that according to the official records, over 100 people have died and more than 1 lakh people have been displaced till date. Brutal incidents of gang rape and murder of young girls have also started coming in recently, they said.
They added that the working and farming people of Manipur and the meek people are living a terrible life. The Centre and the state government, which are strong in the politics of votes in all areas, remain unaffected by the events in Manipur and play an indifferent role. Therefore, both the Cenrtre and state governments have not taken any special steps to calm the clashes that have been going on for nearly three months. They demanded the immediate resignation of Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh. There are already many people whose livelihoods are in a dire straits and it has been learned that many people have been forced to hide in the jungles.
Hence, they demanded the Union Government to take immediate action to ensure punishment, provide adequate food and medical facilities in the shelters and ensure the security of lives and property of the people of Manipur. They also condemned the discriminatory politics of the government and demanded the Union Government to publicly explain why it took 79 days to respond to the incident in Manipur.
