Guwahati: Congress MLA Aftab Uddin Mollah, who was arrested for making derogatory remarks against Hindu priests and saints, has been remanded to one-day police custody, reports said on Wednesday.

The Congress MLA was produced in CJM Court on Wednesday, and the Court granted police custody for a day in connection with the hate speech made by the MLA. Aftab Uddin Mollah was arrested in Guwahati on Tuesday following an FIR lodged with the Deputy Commissioner of Police, East Zone, by a resident from Bhetapara locality. The Jaleswar MLA was arrested by Guwahati Police on Tuesday night at the official residence of Wazed Ali Choudhury, the MLA from South Salmara constituency, in the F Block of the MLA Hostel.

The FIR regarding hate speech given by the MLA of Jaleswar was lodged by Dipak Kumar Das of Bhetapara to the Deputy Commissioner of Police for the East Guwahati Police District. Following this, case number 2127/2023 Under Sections 295 A/ 153 A/ 153 B/ 505 (2) of the Indian Penal Code, the Dispur Police Station was registered under the East Guwahati Police District.
