GUWAHATI: Condemning the BJP-led Central government for its anti-SC/ST/OBC policy, the Congress leaders and members staged a protest at Guwahati Club and demanded the restoration of the reservation policy for SC/ST/OBC.

The protestors also sent a memorandum to President Ram Nath Kovind through the Deputy Commissioner Kamrup (M) urging urgent and necessary steps to ensure the protection and restoration of reservations as a fundamental right, both in appointment and promotions. The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) said that the positive justice for scheduled castes, scheduled tribe and other backward classes is a cardinal principle that runs through the Constitution of India.

The APCC further said that the fundamental and constitutional duty of every government is to ensure reservations for SCs, STs and OBCs in government jobs, positions and educational institutions. Former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said, “The main motto of the Congress during its reign was to help the poor and deprived sections. However, in case of the BJP government it has become clear that their main motto is to help the corporate groups. The Congress always initiated its scheme and programmes for the development of the poor section.” Gogoi claimed, “The tribals and Dalits are the most deprived and backward classes. For them some particular rights have been included in the Constitution for their all-round development. But, the BJP-led government has taken many anti-people policies. Their policies have already thrown the ST, SC and other backward people towards destruction.”
