GUWAHATI: The Assam BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) has come down heavily on the APCC (Assam Pradesh Congress Committee) over its stand on the recent boat mishap at Nimatighat.

Addressing the media at the party HQs in Hengerabari on Friday, the spokesperson of Assam BJP Lakhya Konwar said, "It's really unfortunate that the Congress is playing politics with this unfortunate issue."

He added, "The State government has already initiated punitive measures against three officials of the IWT (Inland Water Transport) Department. Besides, a high-level probe is being conducted into the boat mishap at Nimatighat in Majuli by the State Additional CS (Chief Secretary).

"Moreover, ASDMA personnel are carrying out the rescue operations under the direct supervision of the Chief Minister."

He further stated, "During such exigencies, all should stand together; but, now a few Congress leaders are giving instigating statements on the public domain."

Konwar added, "The State Cabinet, on Thursday, reposed the responsibility of monthly review of the bridge-construction work in Majuli to State Finance & Social Welfare Minister Ajanta Neog".
