GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Railway Station has become a corridor of choice for smugglers of various contraband items, including drugs and psychotropic substances. This fact is borne out by the fact that consignments of various contraband items worth over Rs 21 crore have been seized by the Government Railway Police (GRP) at the Guwahati Railway Station so far in 2022.

According to GRP sources, as many as 140 miscreants have been arrested at the Guwahati Railway Station in connection with the seizure of these contraband items.

The sources said that the items seized by the GRP include 650 kg of ganja, 22 kg of opium, 32,000 tablets of psychotropic substances, 1.5 kg of morphine and 1.20 gm of heroin, 740 sacks of Myanmarese supari, 2 kg of gold, 1,000 bundles of foreign cigarettes, 45 dismantled motorbikes, currency worth Rs 2 crore. These apart, 110 minor children were also rescued by GRP personnel from the Guwahati Railway Station.

The sources said that most of the seized illegal consignments originated in Agartala in Tripura and Dimapur in Nagaland. However, the sources said, it is difficult to trace the consignors as they use fake names and addresses. On the other hand, some consignments sent in parcel form remain unclaimed, the sources added, and attributed this fact to fear of being caught on the part of the intended recipients.
