GUWAHATI: The All Assam Secondary Additional Teachers' Association has urged the State Government to expeditiously implement the Governor's Notification of July 1, 2020 regarding grant of facilities to contractual secondary school teachers which would be at par with those provided to regular teachers.

Talking to The Sentinel after a general meeting of the association at the New Guwahati Railway Colony High School here, its advisor Mahidhar Kalita said that around 8,500 candidates had been appointed as contractual teachers in various secondary schools of the State in 2010, on the basis of merit. Out of those, 4,970 contractual teachers are still in service.

He said that after protracted protests, they began to receive pay as per (Rule of Pay (RoP) from July, 2020. However, they remain deprived of many facilities due to non-implementation of the Governor's Notification of July 1, 2020. The Notification was issued following a decision taken by the Assam Cabinet on May 26, 2020.

As a result, Kalita said, the contractual secondary school teachers are yet to receive due benefits such as medical reimbursement, provident fund and death benefits to the next of kin. He further said that the additional teachers were supposed to be covered under the National Pension Scheme, but that has not happened. Consequently, some additional teachers who retired from service are not receiving a single rupee by way of pension.
